Chicago Cub Soriano Scores $45,000 for Neuroblastoma at the CNCF Grand Slam Gala

Chicago ? 21 September 2009 ? With a little help from his friends, Chicago Cub Alfonso Soriano drew a big crowd to The Children?s Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation?s (CNCF) first annual Grand Slam Gala, raising more than $45,000.

The Gala, held at John Barleycorn in Wrigleyville, was held in honor of Soriano?s Godson, Leonardo Astacio II, who has been battling neuroblastoma for two of his three years of life.

?I am honored to have participated in the CNCF Grand Slam Gala to raise awareness and funds for neuroblastoma.  It?s humbling to see firsthand what my Godson Leo has endured in fighting this aggressive disease.  With the support of organizations like CNCF and the generosity of those willing to step up to the plate for the children and families suffering from neuroblastoma, we can make a difference and find a cure.?

Soriano was joined by fellow Cubs players Carlos Zambrano, Angel Guzman and Andres Blanco, who signed autographs and mingled with the crowd.

CNCF would like to thank all CNCF Grand Slam Gala sponsors for their generosity and support in making the event a success:  WGN Radio, Chicagoland Lincoln/Mercury Dealers Association, the Lake County, IL Convention & Visitors Bureau, Start Your Engines Fuel System Revitalizer, PW Proven Winners Color Choice Flowering Shrubs/Spring Meadow Nursery, Auto Owners Insurance and Perma-Seal Basement Systems.

About Neuroblastoma
Neuroblastoma is a solid tumor cancer that arises in immature nerve cells and strikes mainly infants and toddlers.  It is the most common cancer affecting infants with an incidence rate of almost double that of leukemia.   Its cause is unknown.  Nearly 70 percent of children diagnosed with neuroblastoma have advanced-stage disease.  Less than 30 percent of children with advanced stage disease live five years.
