NB Conference 2002
The Children’s Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation (CNCF) sponsored the first Children’s Neuroblastoma Conference at the Hyatt Regency Chicago on June 27 to June 30, 2002.

Funded by a grant from the Kemper Educational and Charitable Fund and various donations, CNCF organized a group of 8 speakers including several of the leading Neuroblastoma researchers in this country. Also participating was the Children’s Cause, Inc., a nonprofit agency dedicated to education and advocacy on national issues in childhood cancer and Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northern Illinois.

While the parents were in meetings, the children were monitored and cared for in the “Kids Room” by a group of volunteers from Children’s Memorial Hospital; Bear Necessities, A Pediatric Cancer Foundation; Gilda’s Club; Make-A-Wish Foundation and family members. We even had a surprise appearance by Sponge Bob Square Pants.

The guest speakers were:

Dr. Susan Cohn, Children’s Memorial Hospital, Chicago
Dr. Susan Cohn, Children’s Memorial Hospital, Chicago
Dr. C. Patrick Reynolds, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles
Dr. Stephan Grupp, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
James Gurney, PhD., University of Minnesota
Dr. Mary Lou Schmidt, University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine
Dr. Gregory Yanik, University of Michigan
Susan Weiner, PhD., The Children’s Cause, Inc.
Sandi Ring, Make-A-Wish Foundation

Approximately 30 families from the N-Blastoma Online Support Group ( ACOR, Association of Cancer Online Resources, ), families from the Chicago area and other Midwestern states participated in this unique event. It provided an opportunity for the parents to learn more about this disease while their children played together in the “Kids Room.”

It was the goal of CNCF for the parents to become better educated about this disease and to develop a bond and an extended family with others who are experiencing the same thing. We also wanted to pamper the families for even just a day.

It was a tremendous success and we have already started working on ideas for the next Neuroblastoma Conference.

Here are some comments from the speakers and those families that attended:

It was amazing, exhilarating, intense, relaxing, just wonderful." ......"It was truly awesome to meet so many people that we have cried, laughed, and mourned with over the past year.".....
